“Where does it all come from?” Maya asked.
“What, the medicine? We harvest it from the crack,” Monroe said.
“That’s not enough. Where does it come from? Where do you get it all? What flows into that great crack in everything?”
“Look around you. You’re killing off your family. You’re killing off the town. You‑“
He whispered, “I didn’t mean to.”
He sighed. “We found out that if we staunch the flow of this weird subterranean ice melt, it seeps up this miracle drug,” Monroe said.
“How?”
“There’s a switch over here. It controls all the underground valves.”
“Where did you take him?” Maya asked.
“He’s gone now,” the young lady said. “It’s okay. He just disappeared. But it’s all gonna be okay.”
